Dual paned
windows, or double glazed windows, are
specifically designed to insulate your home,
keeping the cold air out in the winter and
keeping in the air-conditioned air during the
summer. Single paned windows don't offer the
level of insulation needed by homes in chilly
regions such as New England. If you have ever
sat near a window when it was freezing outside,
which wasn't insulated, then you understand
about the heat loss that occurs through single
pane glass.
Double paned windows have a thin space between
two thin layers of glass. The air that would
normally be trapped between the two panes of
glass has been removed in order to create a
vacuum. This space then provides insulation by
creating a barrier between you and the chilly
outside air.
To add an even greater amount of insulation to
the double-glazed windows, several window
manufactures add argon gas to the space between
the windowpanes. The barrier created the gas
also reduces the amount of UV light from the
sun, helping to keep your home cool in the
summer and protect your furniture from fading.
Thus saving you money two ways: lower heating
and cooling bills and furniture replacement.
If you have an older home with single paned
windows, then you more than likely need to
upgrade your windows to double paned glass. In
addition, if you reside in an especially cold
climate, there are other options such as for
triple glazed windows, which will provide you
with even more insulation. By replacing your
drafty windows, you'll be amazed as to how much
energy and money you'll save on your heating and
cooling bills.
