How to Choose
A Vinyl Window Contractor
Those who
want to have new vinyl windows installed, buy
are not really handy around the house, will need
to hire a vinyl window contractor to do the job
for them.
How do you know
where to start? Your first step should be to get
estimates from various contractors, at least
three different companies.
It is helpful to remember that the different
prices you receive may not reflect differences
in the quality of the product. Some large
retailers have significant overhead costs: they
have telemarketers, direct mail campaigns,
inside sales reps who schedule appointments,
outside sales reps who come out to your home to
give you an estimate, people who come and
measure your windows, and installers who come
out and put your windows into place. They need
to pass the costs for all these employees and
activities on to their customers. Smaller
companies that only need to cover the salaries
of a few people will often be able to give you a
better price on the exact same products.
Don’t be fooled into thinking that a higher
price means better quality windows. Make sure
each estimate spells out the particular brand of
windows and the details of the window
manufacturer’s warranty. High quality vinyl
replacement windows should last you a lifetime,
so the manufacturer should have no problem
giving you a lifetime warranty. It is a good
idea to determine how long a particular
manufacturer has been making vinyl windows. You
want to work with a solid window company since
your lifetime warrant will be useless if the
company goes out of business.
After you have satisfied yourself that you are
purchasing high quality windows from a reputable
manufacturer, you need to determine how long the
installer has been in business installing
replacement windows. The company you choose
should be both insured and licensed. While some
unlicensed window installers really do an
excellent job, you really have no means to get
help if there should happen to be a problem on
the job with an unlicensed installer.
